THE CZECHOSLOVAK-AMERICAN MARIONETTE THEATRE (CAMT) is dedicated to the preservation and presentation of traditional and not-so-traditional puppetry. As new immigrants from Prague, we wanted to create a theatre company based on the well-known marionette traditions of Central Europe, where puppetry has a strong and creative history.

Our first New York season in 1990 began with Johannes Dokchtor Faust, a Petrifying Puppet Comedye with a cast of sixteen antique Czech puppets discovered by director, Vít Hořejš at the Jan Hus Church, nestled in the heart of Manhattan’s Czech neighborhood. Faust received an enthusiastic response, and was also the lead production featured in the 1994 Obie Award-winning Faust Festival in SoHo.

Since founding the company in 1990, we have created over a dozen original productions and garnered accolades from the press and dedicated audiences aged 5 to 105. Many of our projects have been presented at our favorite venue, New York’s renowned La MaMa Experimental Theatre. At La MaMa we have performed the following shows:

  • The Twelfth Night video
  • Once There Was a Village
  • The Life and Times of Lee Harvey Oswald
  • Don Juan, or The Wages of Debauchery
  • The Prose of the Transsiberian and of the Little Joan of France video
  • Johannes Dokchtor Faust video
  • Rusalka, the Little Rivermaid video
  • Golem video    (Co-produced with LaMaMa and later featured in the 1998 Jim Henson International Festival.)
  • The Very Sad Story of Ethel & Julius, Lovers and Spyes, and about Their Untymelie End while Sitting in a Small Room at the Correctional Facility in Ossining, N.Y. video

Shows at other venues have included:

  • The Bass Saxophone video   (based on a novel by popular Czech-Canadian writer Josef Skvorecky)
  • Hamlet video   (Originally produced at The Vineyard Theatre; 2004 Prague Summer Shakespeare Festival in the Lord Chamberlain’s Palace Courtyard at Prague Castle; and 2007 at Jane’s Carousel in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn.)
